You know you are doing it right when...
Hallway installation of recent collages, October 2020,
For the last few months I’ve been dedicating Sunday afternoons to making art. My mind (and heart and psyche) take a welcome break from all other things as I cut and paste. At the end of the session I usually post on my Instagram feed and stories the outcome (the stories are set to automatically post to Facebook stories). And then pretty quickly my account gets flagged and I’m put on some sort of notice or restriction. Last weekend it was 3 days of not being able to use Facebook. The weekend before that my content was removed from Instagram. The funny part is that it’s always an either/or situation: either Facebook or Instagram gets flagged, not both, even though the same content is posted to both and the platforms are owned by the same company. Ultimately I don’t care. I find the whole thing sexist, funny, and yes, frustrating. But also whatever, fuck off. I don’t have any illusions about either platform or “owning” my posted content. I’ll keep at it. And also keep refuting the penalty, when that option is made available (it’s not always easy to figure how to dispute the removal of content or punishment).
I may be more upset if my work isn’t removed than when I get a notification of violating Community Standards. (Um, whose standards? Which community?)
